Habitats

Mature fish: pools, associated with snags and large woody debris

Spawning: eggs deposited on snags, rocks or firm clay

Biology

Age at maturity/spawning: 4 years; extreme variability depending on location and growth rate

Spawning season: October—December

Spawning cue: Onset of upstream migration generally coincides with elevated water levels. High larval survival occurs when significant rise in water level coincides with the breeding season.

Spawning frequency: annual

Critical water temperature for spawning: 20 ºC

Time to hatching: 4.5—13 days depending on temperature

Spawning migration: often upstream

Longevity: 30 years
