Physical-chemical state

Changes to the acidic load entering a wetland can affect pH of water/soil.

The rapid release of acid into a wetland following rain events can reduce pH levels of the soil and water leading to disease, e.g. red-spot in fish, mass mortality events, loss of sensitive biota and the leaching of toxic metals. Acid tolerant species can dominate and prevent original plant species from re-establishing or the soil can become so acid it can prevent the growth of any plant species.
