Modifications

The drainage sub-basins layer used by WetlandSummary is based on the source layers below, with the following modifications:

  • Name is the value of the SUB_NAME field
  • Fixed 1 invalid geometry
  • Clipped 23 features extending partially beyond the Queensland border (some may be due to minor misalignment at the border)
  • Dissolved 130 source features into 129 drainage sub-basins
  • Fixed Barron River area which incorrectly includes all of the Freshwater Creek area in the source layer

Additional human language abstract/description
This dataset contains the extent, name and unique ID number of the Basin Sub Areas (subdivisions of major drainage basins) in the State of Queensland.
Resource purpose/summary
To provide an authorative single point of truth for the extent of Basin Sub Areas in the State Queensland. It is suitable for use in land administration, emergency and water management, monitoring of climate change, hydrological modelling, topographic and vegetation mapping and in the production of navigational and web based mapping applications.

Explanation of restrictions or prerequisites
Unrestricted to all levels of government and community. Data is available to all government agencies, community groups and individuals. Dataset is available through physical supply and may be made available via web delivery tools, for example, through DNRME's internet sites.
Supplemental information about the data
The dataset's original purpose was to implant some location identifier into the numbering system of bores and gauging stations. For example all bore numbers were prefixed with a four-digit number. The first three were used to locate the bore into a specific major river basin .The forth digit was used to locate the bore into a subdivision of that major river basin as shown in the Basin Sub Areas - Queensland coverage. This coverage is now only used as a means of numbering bores and gauging stations.

The dataset was captured at 1:100 000.

The seaward edge of this data aligns with the Coastline and State Border - Queensland dataset.

Feature Types:
BASIN SUB AREA - A sub division of a major drainage basin

Attributes:
SUB_NAME - The name of the Basin Sub Area
SUB_NUMBER - A unique number allocated to the Basin Sub Area

This dataset is stored in an ESRI Geodatabase. Some columns names may be shortened if downloaded in the ESRI shape format.

Report
Data quality report, measure description
Capture is complete. However new Basin Sub Areas may be added in the future.
Report
Data quality report, measure description
Data should be free from overshoots, undershoots, duplicate lines. Drainage lines should not cross basin boundaries.
Report
Data quality report, measure description
Accuracy of the data is dependent on the accuracy of the elevation data of the associated 1:100000 topographic map.  This data is suitable for scales 1:100000 and greater.
Report
Data quality report, measure description
Information was obtained from the Gauging Station Catchments - Queensland dataset. Attribute naming was validated against this data and has an accuracy of 100%.
Data Lineage
Lineage statement, a general explanation
This data set was created as a consequence of a larger project involving the capturing of all gauging station catchments in Queensland.
The polygons were constructed by:
- Using the existing major & minor river basins as an external framework
- Creating a clear overlay matching every 1:100 000 topographical map in Queensland
- The clear overlay had all 1:250 000 river basin boundaries, the major and minor river basins as well as the corner points for each map sheet plotted on it
- Using these 1:250 000 basin boundaries, the major and minor river basins and the topography from the 1: 100 000 topo maps as a guide, the Sub-Basin Areas were determined and traced on to the clear overlay
- These basins were then digitised and stored in an ArcInfo coverage
- RMS errors not > than 0.005
- Regions were created from the resulting polygons
- Attributes pertaining to these regions are: Sub_Name; Sub_Number as definded by the Australian Water Resources Management Committee (WRMC).

River Basins are subsets of and have boundaries that are aligned to and nested with the associated Drainage Basin.
Please refer to the Drainage Basin - Queensland dataset.

In 2020, the seaward edge of the data was moved to align with the Coastline and State Border - Queensland dataset.
