Potential groundwater dependent ecosystem aquifer mapping background

A basic requirement for managing groundwater and groundwater dependent ecosystems (GDEs) is to understand where and how groundwater moves through the landscape.

Quick facts

The National
Groundwater Information System is a spatial database for GIS specialists that contains a range of groundwater information submitted by States and Territories. The System contains more than 800 000 bore locations with associated lithology logs, bore construction logs and hydrostratigraphy logs.

Potential groundwater dependent ecosystem aquifer mapping

Potential groundwater dependent ecosystem aquifer mapping identifies the extent and key characteristics of the shallowest watertable aquifers in a landscape.

The wetland, GDE and shallowest watertable aquifer mapping and classification are available through:

Potential GDE aquifer mapping

Potential GDE aquifer mapping identifies the extent and key characteristics of the potential GDE aquifers in a landscape. There may be other aquifers not captured in this mapping (e.g. confined aquifers). Potential GDE aquifer mapping has been characterised according to a range of criteria including confinement, geology, porosity, groundwater flow system, salinity, pH, recharge process, etc.

The potential GDE aquifer mapping consists of 1 data set which can be viewed independently or complementary to Queensland’s GDE mapping.
