Managing for ecological requirements

Managers need a holistic integrated approach to the conservation and management of waterbirds and their habitats. They need to take into account feeding, roosting, movement, aggregation and breeding and moulting requirements. Consideration should be given to daily, seasonal and annual cycles and occasional extreme changes (drought; flood) in wetland habitats. Seasonal occurrence of waterbird species and long-term trends should be understood and integrated into management.
